Salt Lake City-based online university receives recognition for innovation from Utah organization

SALT LAKE CITY — For the sixth consecutive year, Western Governors University (WGU),, received the Best of State medal for best online education. Accepting the honor at the Best of State Gala at the Salt Palace was Provost David Leasure.

“This award recognizes WGU’s vision of making higher education more accessible to everyone, not just in Utah, but throughout the country,” Leasure said. “It is something that our WGU staff as well as the state of Utah can be truly proud of.”

Presented annually, the Best of State Awards were created to recognize outstanding organizations and businesses in Utah. Nominations are reviewed by more than 100 judges and are evaluated based on three areas: achievement in the field of endeavor, innovation, and contribution to improving the quality of life in Utah.

Founded in 1997 by 19 U.S. governors, including former Utah Governor Mike Leavitt, WGU has grown into a nationally recognized online university with more than 46,000 students and 33,000 graduates in all 50 states. The university has more than 2,700 employees and continues to be a major employer in the state of Utah. WGU is accredited and has been recognized for its quality by the United States Distance Learning Association.
