WGU Contract Subject Matter Expert (SME) Positions

WGU is committed to its unique, student-centric, competency-based approach that places the greatest emphasis on student learning. Because learning at WGU is personalized, we do not use the typical college-course model of professor faculty, fixed schedules or group pacing. Instead, each student is guided and assisted through a personalized learning experience by faculty and staff serving in roles such as course mentors, student mentors, and evaluators.

Because WGU is dedicated to offering our students the most pertinent, up-to-date knowledge and skills in the industry today, we seek professionals who are experts in their field to provide this vital information and insight throughout our course development process. A subject matter expert (SME) understands, articulates, and implements best practices related to their area of expertise. The SME is an active participant in the development of courses and assessments, ensuring the student will receive a quality education. Subject Matter Experts collaborate with instructional designers, learning resource specialists, assessment managers, other SMEs, and other stakeholders in the following tasks:

  • Identify learning resources that best meet the needs of the learner
  • Design course competencies and objectives
  • Create effective instructions and/or activities that provide a learning experience that enables students to meet course competencies and objectives
  • Create and review various types of assessment materials
  • Evaluate existing courses

SMEs are contracted with WGU on a per-project basis. There are several ways to participate, including varied time commitments and types of development work available.
