Nursing Scholarships Offered by Western Governors
University for Master's Degree Programs

SALT LAKE CITY -- Western Governors University (www.wgu.edu) is now offering its Future of Nursing Scholarships to prospective nurse leaders, nurse managers and nurse educators. These scholarships are designed to help working nurses earn a master's degree online to become educators, managers, and leaders in various healthcare settings. The scholarships are available for M.S. in Nursing—Education and M.S. in Nursing—Leadership and Management degree programs.

These online nursing degrees are designed for licensed RNs who hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and whose licenses are unencumbered (no suspensions, revocations or investigations). Western Governors University is working to fill these high-need areas in the growing healthcare field. Getting a degree through WGU's online, competency-based academic model provides the flexibility and convenience for working nurses who need to obtain a master's degree while continuing to practice.

Each scholarship is valued up to $5,000. The scholarship will be credited to the recipient's account at the rate of $1,000 per six-month term for up to five terms. Tuition for a six-month term is $3,250, less the $1,000 per term scholarship.

The scholarship awards are based on a reasonable experience of five six-month terms to complete a program. Most students can complete their master's degree in about two years, but may complete their degree sooner depending on the incoming student's prior experience, academic background, and commitment to study.

WGU is a non-profit, regionally accredited institution and is the only online competency-based university. The university is fully accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and the Distance Education and Training Council. Nursing programs are based on the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials.

Scholarships are awarded based upon a candidate's academic record, readiness for online study, financial need, and current competency, plus other considerations. For detailed information about eligibility requirements and application, go to: http://www.wgu.edu/msnscholarship or call toll-free 1-866-225-5948, extension 1693.

"Competency-based…"
"I like the idea of a competency-based program. In some areas I already had expertise and skills so I could take an independent study class and build the portfolio and take the exams. In other areas I needed more instruction."
—Gretchen Burr, WGU graduate, high school teacher
"I am an expert…"
"Western Governors has raised the bar for online courses. Instead of graduating from their courses and saying, "I have passed all of the requirements," they want their students to say, "I graduated from WGU and I am an expert in the field of..."
—Jeffrey Cravy, WGU graduate student
"Competency-based…"
"Google has pioneered the idea of access to information. The reason Google thinks WGU is such a good idea is because WGU has pioneered the concept of competency-based education whenever you want it."
—Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google Inc.
