WGU Offers Spouses to Teachers Scholarships to All Military Spouses
SALT LAKE CITY -- Western Governors University (www.wgu.edu) is extending its offering of supplemental $1,500
scholarships for the Spouses to Teachers program. WGU is offering the scholarships to all military spouses in
any location, beyond the 14 current pilot states where the Spouses-to-Teachers program is offered. Bachelor's and
master's degree programs are offered by WGU's Teachers College.
The scholarship is valued up to $1,500. Scholarship recipients can apply $300 of the scholarship money per
six-month term at WGU, renewable up to five terms. Although WGU's competency-based model allows students to
complete the requirements of a graduate program in less than two and a half years, the scholarship awards are
based on a reasonable experience of five six-month terms to complete the program. Scholarships are also available
for undergraduate teacher certification degree programs, distributed at the rate of $300 per six-month term for the
first five terms only.
Getting a degree at WGU is convenient and accessible since WGU is a fully accredited, private, non-profit online
university, which is competency-based. WGU students earn their degrees by demonstrating their competency and skills in
various disciplines by taking a series of carefully designed assessments. Assessments determine a student's
success rate at WGU, not fixed course schedules.
The university is also a member of Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC), which is dedicated to helping service
personnel and their families get college degrees. Spouses to Teachers is managed through the Department of
Education and Department of Defense by the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES).

"Competency-based…"
"I like the idea of a competency-based program. In some areas I already had expertise and skills so I could take an independent study class and build the portfolio and take the exams. In other areas I needed more instruction."

"I am an expert…"
"Western Governors has raised the bar for online courses. Instead of graduating from their courses and saying, "I have passed all of the requirements," they want their students to say, "I graduated from WGU and I am an expert in the field of..."

"Competency-based…"
"Google has pioneered the idea of access to information. The reason Google thinks WGU is such a good idea is because WGU has pioneered the concept of competency-based education whenever you want it."
