About WGU Students
Today's WGU student body is quite diverse. WGU has students in all 50 states and serves active-duty military at overseas installations. Students live in major metropolitan areas, suburbs, and rural areas. Their average age is about 40 but the age range is from the 20s to the 60s.
WGU students are also busy. Most of them are working full-time or part-time jobs while they are students. Most of the students pursuing a bachelor's degree already have some prior college experience.
About WGU Graduates
Western Governors University graduated its first student, with a Master of Arts in Learning and Technology, in November, 2000. Since then WGU has grown dramatically and now graduates more than 400 students each year in a growing number of degree programs. WGU surveys its graduates to assess the impact of their degrees on their lives and careers. Surveys and individual case studies also allow WGU to continually improve our programs.

Alumni Association
Just as WGU students participate in a new and unique online educational experience, we are creating a unique alumni community that will be meaningful throughout our alumni's careers. We are creating a professional community where graduates may share with their peers their experiences, practices, news, and success strategies, while asking advice, counseling with each other, sharing job opportunities, and connecting in other meaningful ways. We foresee a day when thousands of WGU alumni from around the country are interacting and learning from each other as participants in one of the most vibrant dynamic professional communities in the country.

"Competency-based…"
"I like the idea of a competency-based program. In some areas I already had expertise and skills so I could take an independent study class and build the portfolio and take the exams. In other areas I needed more instruction."
—Gretchen Burr, WGU graduate, high school teacher
"I am an expert…"
"Western Governors has raised the bar for online courses. Instead of graduating from their courses and saying, "I have passed all of the requirements," they want their students to say, "I graduated from WGU and I am an expert in the field of..."
—Jeffrey Cravy, WGU graduate student
"Competency-based…"
"Google has pioneered the idea of access to information. The reason Google thinks WGU is such a good idea is because WGU has pioneered the concept of competency-based education whenever you want it."
—Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google Inc.
