WGU Teaching Scholarships Available for San Juan, Tooele County Residents

American Express grant provides up to $5,000 for residents to earn master’s degrees in teaching from NCATE-accredited online university

SALT LAKE CITY — Teachers in San Juan and Tooele counties who want to go back to school to earn a master’s degree may be eligible for a scholarship, thanks to American Express and Utah-based Western Governors University. The WGU-AMEX Excellence in Education Scholarships provide up to $5,000 toward tuition for one of the online university’s 10 master’s degree programs in Education.

While the program is competitive, multiple scholarships will be awarded. Recipients will be eligible to receive up to $1,000 per six-month term for up to five terms at NCATE-accredited WGU. A significant savings from WGU’s already affordable flat-rate tuition of less than $3,000 per term, the scholarship can reduce the cost of a master’s degree by as much as one-third.

In addition to residents of San Juan and Tooele counties, the scholarships are also available to Salt Lake County residents with refugee status.

WGU’s Teachers College is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the same body that grants accreditation to Utah’s major public and private universities. In addition, the online Teachers College has also received unconditional accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). WGU is the first exclusively online university to receive NCATE accreditation for its degree programs that lead to teacher licensure.

WGU’s programs allow busy adults to earn their degrees online while they meet job and family responsibilities. Students earn their degrees through a rigorous competency-based model that lets them advance through courses when they demonstrate that they have mastered the subject matter. Because advancement is based on the students’ knowledge rather than time spent in class, many students are able to accelerate their programs, finishing faster and saving tuition costs.
