Utah Teachers Scholarships Available to Enable Professional Advancement
SALT LAKE CITY -- Scholarships are available from Western Governors University for Utah teachers currently
working in Title I schools. These scholarships offer Utah teachers an excellent opportunity to further their professional development. Utah teachers can earn a master's degree online while they continue to teach in their classrooms.
Western Governors University, is a non-profit, fully accredited online university, and is offering the scholarships to certified K-12 Utah teachers currently teaching in Title I schools who want to get a Master of Education degree in Management and Innovation, Learning and Technology or Measurement and Evaluation, a Master of Arts in Mathematics Education or Science Education or a Master of Arts in English Language Learning. These scholarships provide up to a total of $4,000. The cost of $2,790 per six-month term at WGU can be reduced by $800 per six-month term for up to five terms with the scholarship money.
With the high need nationally for qualified teachers in math and science, WGU is doing its part in filling that need. Federal mandates are requiring teachers to meet higher instructional standards and these scholarships make the
professional development accessible, allowing teachers to study at a time and place convenient to them.
This is a competitive program and scholarships will be awarded based upon academic record, current competency
and other considerations. Applications should be submitted as soon as possible.

"Competency-based…"
"I like the idea of a competency-based program. In some areas I already had expertise and skills so I could take an independent study class and build the portfolio and take the exams. In other areas I needed more instruction."

"Western Governors has raised the bar for online courses. Instead of graduating from their courses and saying, "I have passed all of the requirements," they want their students to say, "I graduated from WGU and I am an expert in the field of..."

"Competency-based…"
"Google has pioneered the idea of access to information. The reason Google thinks WGU is such a good idea is because WGU has pioneered the concept of competency-based education whenever you want it."
