Even though you are at a distance, at WGU we make sure you always feel supported
and connected. As soon as you enroll into your WGU program, you will be assigned
a mentor who will help and advise you in many ways.
Your mentor is your primary point of contact and is fully committed to your success.
He or she (with the added insight from your Enrollment Counselor) will evaluate
your education background and work experience to determine your current competencies.
With this evaluation, you will work with your mentor to develop your personalized
Academic Action Plan (AAP), which serves as a blueprint for completion of your degree
program.
Your Coach, Advisor, and Supporter
Your mentor will work with you throughout the duration of your program to ensure
that you are successfully developing the competencies needed and to direct you to the learning
resources you require. You will interact with your mentor on a regular basis via
phone, email, and web conferencing.
The Student-Mentor Communication Protocol
You will be expected to maintain regular communication with your mentor while enrolled
at WGU. The student-mentor communication protocol calls for:
First term: Your mentor will contact you once per week until you achieve "good
standing" status. This means you have made Satisfactory Academic Progress (explained
in more detail on Your Academic Action Plan).
After first term: Providing you remain in good standing, your mentor will contact
you at least once every two weeks by phone.
For students on probation or suspension: If you reach this status, your mentor will
contact you once a week until you achieve "good standing" status.
When you take part in the online student communities, you will correspond with community mentors. These mentors are similar to instructors in some ways, but serve in more of a resource mentor or subject-matter expert role, helping you develop competency in specific subject areas.
