The Student Experience
You may be wondering, "What's it like being an online WGU student?"
Some aspects of your WGU student experience will be quite similar to what you'd experience at any college. You will study, do assignments, and take tests. You will interact with your fellow students and faculty, although at a distance rather than in a classroom. Other aspects of the WGU experience are quite special. They can be summarized as:
Competency-focused Flexible
Personalized Independent Yet Connected
Mentored Accelerated
The Life of a WGU Student
When you become a WGU student, the mentoring team and staff immediately become focused on helping you feel connected even though you are "at a distance." During your first month, you will be enrolled in an excellent introduction course called Education Without Boundaries (EWB). The course is designed to introduce you to online learning, to get you involved in group activities and learning communities, and to develop your own personalized Academic Action Plan (AAP).

You will begin to work with your mentor during EWB. Your mentor will begin to discuss your personal academic background and career experience, your comfort with independent learning, and the amount of time you will commit to your studies. Your AAP becomes your roadmap through your program—roughly speaking it's a schedule of your required assessments and how to prepare for them. Your mentor will assign the best learning resources for you (courses, independent study modules, etc.) based upon your background and strengths and weaknesses.

As you proceed through your learning program, you and your mentor will determine when you are ready for the required assessments. When you are ready, your mentor will schedule the assessments. Basically, this process is repeated throughout your program, with your mentor serving as academic advisor, coach, and friendly supporter of your ultimate success. Speak to an Enrollment Counselor for a more detailed explanation.

"I never felt alone…"
"Far from feeling alone, I was guided at each point in the process by my mentor. I never felt alone. In fact, as I compare my educational experience at WGU with the other schools I attended, I had never experienced such support."
—Kathryn Schlendorf, WGU graduate
"More relevant…"
"I learned things that are more relevant and I learned in a manner that makes it much more transferrable to the workplace. In my undergraduate work, my professors would say, 'you'll probably only use about 35% of this in your field.' But with WGU, I'm already using 85% of it right now!"
—Matt Stowell, WGU graduate
"Quality is excellent…"
"We are very pleased to have WGU take on the challenge of teacher preparation and development. We have many people who need degrees but cannot attend traditional classes. Furthermore, the quality of the programs is excellent."
—George Ann Rice, Associate Superintendent, Clark County School Dis
