Managing your career is a tough job, but there are tools out there to help you.
LinkedIn is the place to start managing your career online. The functionality of LinkedIn is astounding! How it interfaces with human resource managers and their organizations, search engines like Google and Yahoo!, other LinkedIn members, and the Internet in general will greatly assist you.
You will be able to successfully build a marketable personal brand with your LinkedIn profile. Your brand will be easily searchable by those looking to hire someone like you.
You will be able to network with others by professional organization, city, industry, education, and skill set.
You will be able to search for jobs or keep your name in front of people, even if you aren’t looking for a job.
You will be able to find leads for potential sales, clients, partners, or investors. LinkedIn is the online network you must be a part of in today’s economy.
If you are not yet a member of LinkedIn, join today. If you have questions about joining LinkedIn or just need a little help setting up your profile, reach out to the WGU Career Services team or the WGU Alumni Relations team. We would be happy to help answer questions to get you started on LinkedIn.
Once you are a member of LinkedIn and have entered Western Governors University in the “Education” section of your profile, you will be connected to the WGU University Page, and you’ll become searchable to other WGU students and alumni. (The WGU state-affiliated universities—WGU Indiana, WGU Washington, WGU Texas, WGU Missouri, and WGU Tennessee—also have their own University Pages on LinkedIn.)
You also will want to join the WGU Students and Alumni Official group. That group is a “walled garden” of only WGU students and alumni. It’s where we talk about current trends in our industries, enjoy motivational discussions about becoming better students and professionals, and participate in networking conversations where we share job openings and suggestions. Come and network with nearly 10,000 WGU students and alumni around the country.
In fact, because we are quickly approaching the 10,000-member mark, we are celebrating by holding some drawings for some Amazon.com gift cards and other great prizes. All you have to do to qualify for the prizes is become a member of the group and make a comment here on this blog post about how you use LinkedIn for networking or how we can use LinkedIn more effectively as a university and as the WGU Alumni Network.
To help you get the most out of your time on LinkedIn, we have put together a series of online seminars that will speak more about how to set up a LinkedIn profile, how to use LinkedIn groups and other tools, and basically how to manage your career using LinkedIn. Stay tuned to your email and to WGU’s social media for more information as those become available.
Don’t forget to leave your comment below to enter the drawing for an Amazon.com gift card. We will be announcing the winners shortly after we reach the 10,000-member mark.
