WGU Scholarships for South Dakota Residents
Western Governors University is pleased to offer the WGU Scholarships for South Dakota Residents valued at up to $3,500. These scholarships, awarded competitively, are designed to help working adult South Dakotans attend college online—on their schedules.

WGU is a regionally accredited university founded and supported by 19 governors and more than 20 corporate and foundation partners.

Deadline for applying: January 1, 2006 (Unless funds are exhausted earlier)

Who Should Apply

This is a competitive program. Scholarships will be awarded based upon a candidate's academic record, readiness for online study, and current competency in business or information technology, plus other considerations. Please answer all scholarship applications carefully and accurately.

WGU anticipates that up to 10 scholarships will be awarded. Classes begin the first of every month.

About the Scholarship
The WGU Scholarships for South Dakota Residents is designed to help students get off to a fast start at WGU. The scholarship will be credited to your account at the rate of $1,500 for the first six-month term and $500 per term for up to four additional terms.

The scholarship does not cover the regular application fee, the annual library fee, the cost of books, or course materials. The scholarship recipient must read the WGU Student Handbook and agree to and understand the tuition and refund policies. The student will also be required to sign a WGU Scholarship Agreement before these monies will be awarded.

Eligibility Requirements

  • 23 years of age or older
  • South Dakota resident
  • Submit official transcripts of all prior college work.
  • Interview with a WGU Enrollment Counselor prior to the award decision.
Note: Students currently enrolled in WGU degree programs are not eligible.

Financial Aid is Also Available
You may be able to use financial aid too. You may choose to pay for the remaining portion of your degree through financial aid (subject to your eligibility). Pell Grants, which do not have to be repaid, are granted based upon financial need. Federal Direct Student Loans are available to all students. Subsidized loans, which are dependent on financial need, reduce the interest due on the loans.

Additional Details
If you would like to discuss the scholarship program or WGU's degrees before submitting an application for the scholarship, feel free to speak to an enrollment counselor at 1-866-225-5948 ext. 3107. (Please speak to your regular enrollment counselor if you have already been assigned one.)

Your transcripts will be evaluated as part of the award process. You may submit unofficial transcripts (i.e. copies) initially, but official transcripts must be received before a final award is made. Transcripts should be sent to:

"WGU has opened doors for me that I would not have been able to access without an extreme inconvenience for my family, my career, and myself."
—Connie Keogh, WGU graduate
"On my own time…"
"I chose WGU because of the freedom of doing the work on my own time and at my own pace. In the past, I had started master's programs twice through regular universities and found the class schedules impossible to fit into my schedule."

"Speed their licensure…"
WGU Teachers College will be a boon to states seeking training for current teachers and paraprofessionals to help them meet the education requirements under the No Child Left Behind Act and speed their licensure."
