| Financial Aid Overview |
Good News! Because tuition at WGU is quite modest, you should be able to finish your degree without worrying about large education debts for years to come. Federal financial aid will cover most if not all your direct education expenses (tuition and fees, books, technology) and in some cases assist with other educational expenses (room and board and personal).
WGU was selected by the U.S. Department of Education to be one of the first distance-learning institutions in the country to provide financial aid to online students. While financial aid at WGU is similar to that at most other colleges, some differences apply because we are online.
You will be eligible for aid through Western Governors University ONLY if you are admitted to a WGU program. If you have already applied for admission and you want to apply for aid, you can begin the WGU Financial Aid Application process now. There are two basic steps to applying for aid:
1) Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) offered through the U.S. Department of Education. Formulas are then applied to the data you submit to determine your aid eligibility.
2) Complete the WGU Financial Aid Process. You will also need to complete the online WGU Financial Aid process to receive aid to attend WGU.
The entire financial aid process can be handled online through the WGU Financial Aid Application process.

Types of Aid
| | |
WGU students who are eligible for federal financial aid may receive two types of aid:
Pell grants
| | |
Pell Grants are need-based grants (you do not pay them back) that are only available to students who have not yet earned a bachelor's degree. They are available to the most needy, with need calculated based upon income, number of dependents, and other factors that are reported on the FAFSA.
Student Loans
| | |
Two types of student loans are made available to students:
* Subsidized Loans are based upon demonstrated financial need. The interest on a Federal Family Education Subsidized Loan is paid by the federal government while you are enrolled in school at least half time, or during grace or deferment periods.
* Unsubsidized Loans are not based upon financial need. Regardless of your income (or the income of your parents if you are a dependent student), you may qualify for a Federal Family Education Unsubsidized Loan. You are responsible for the interest from the day you borrow the money until you pay off the loan. While in school or during a grace or deferment period, you can pay the interest periodically or you can add it (capitalize) to the balance.
Annual loan limit varies based on your program. Click here for more information about loan limits.
Interest Rates on Loans: The interest rate you are charged for both Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans is
variable and is adjusted once a year, on July 1. The current interest rate for new loans is 6.80 percent. The rate will never
exceed 8.25 percent.

Other Federal Grant Programs
| | |
The U.S. Department of Education has issued two new grant programs as of July 1, 2006.
National SMART Grant
Third- or fourth-year full-time undergraduate students who are Pell Grant recipients in designated degree programs are
eligible for this grant.
Academic Competitiveness Grant
First-year undergraduate students who are Pell Grant recipients are eligible for this grant. You must have never enrolled in an

"Opened doors…"
"WGU has opened doors for me that I would not have been able to access without an extreme inconvenience for my family, my career, and myself."
| Connie Keogh, WGU graduate |
"On my own time…"
"I chose WGU because of the freedom of doing the work on my own time and at my own pace. In the past, I had started master's programs twice through regular universities and found the class schedules impossible to fit into my schedule."
| Dennis Nalder, WGU graduate student |
"Speed their licensure…"
WGU Teachers College will be a boon to states seeking training for current teachers and paraprofessionals to help them meet the education requirements under the No Child Left Behind Act and speed their licensure."
