WGU Graduate Scholarships for Hispanic-American Educators
Western Governors University is pleased to offer the WGU Graduate Scholarships for Hispanic-American Educators. These scholarships are designed to help currently working K-12 teachers attend college online—on their schedules.

Who Should Apply

Multiple scholarships will be awarded. However, this is a competitive program and scholarships will be awarded based upon a candidate's academic record, readiness for online study, and current competency, plus other considerations. Because WGU programs begin every month, scholarships are awarded continuously throughout the year. Interested individuals should apply as soon as possible.

Application Deadline: June 30, 2006

Perfect for Your Busy Life
You face many challenges—trying to juggle your teaching job, family, and other obligations while trying to continue your education. Going to a traditional university campus just will not work with your schedule.

WGU is a unique, regionally-accredited university that grants degrees and certificates based completely on competencies—your ability to demonstrate your skills and knowledge on a series of assessments carefully selected to measure your knowledge of a field of study—rather than through required courses. At WGU you can—

  • Obtain your degree completely online—from any location
  • Use the knowledge you gained from prior work and academic experience to move through your degree program more quickly
  • Avoid taking courses in areas you have already mastered
  • Study at a time and place convenient to you

About the Scholarship
A WGU Graduate Scholarship for Hispanic-American Educators is valued up to $4,000. The scholarship will be credited to your account at the rate of $800 per six-month term. Although WGU's competency-based model allows students to complete the requirements of a master's degree in less than two and a half years, the scholarship awards are based on a reasonable experience of five six-month terms to complete the program.

The scholarship recipient must read the WGU Student Handbook and agree to and understand the tuition and refund policies. The student will also be required to sign a WGU Scholarship Agreement before these monies will be awarded.

Tuition for a six-month term is $2,790, less the $800 per term scholarship.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a Hispanic-American living in the United States (including Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories).
  • Be a currently licensed elementary or secondary teacher in a U.S. school.
  • Submit official transcripts of all prior college work.
  • Interview with a WGU Enrollment Counselor or scholarship reviewer prior to the award decision.
  • Provide a statement of financial need or special circumstances (if you are a finalist). This may include completion of the US Department of Education's Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Learn more.
  • Submit a short essay on career objectives (if you are a finalist).
At the discretion of the WGU scholarship reviewer, you may also be asked to submit letters of recommendation, interview with WGU faculty via phone, and provide additional background information.

If English is not your native language, you will need to submit proof of a qualifying score on the Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language Test (TOEFL iBT). WGU requires a qualifying score of 80 or higher. (WGU school code: 3949) Learn more.

Because this program has an objective to expand access to graduate programs, preference will be given to individuals who are not currently WGU students.

Proof of eligibility is not required at the time of application, but an affidavit of eligibility will be required if you are awarded a scholarship.

Financial Aid is Also Available
You may choose to pay for the remaining portion of your degree through federal financial aid (subject to your eligibility). Pell Grants, which do not have to be repaid, are granted based upon financial need. Federal Direct Student Loans are available to all students. Subsidized loans, which are dependent on financial need, reduce the interest due on the loans.

WGU is an accredited university founded and supported by 19 governors and more than 20 corporate and foundation partners.

If you would like to discuss the scholarship program or WGU's degrees before submitting an application for the scholarship, feel free to speak to an enrollment counselor at 1-866-225-5948.

"Speed their licensure…"
WGU Teachers College will be a boon to states seeking training for current teachers and paraprofessionals to help them meet the education requirements under the No Child Left Behind Act and speed their licensure."
