Become a Teacher in Rhode Island

If you aspire to become a teacher, Western Governors University can help. Our teaching certification programs will prepare you to effectively educate others.

Before becoming a licensed teacher in Rhode Island, you must meet all of Rhode Island’s teacher certification requirements, including:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Completion of a state-approved teacher preparation program no more than five years previous to application for teacher certification in Rhode Island.
  • For secondary education teacher candidates, a major or the equivalent in the content area specialization for which certification is sought.
  • Passing the required Praxis exams.
