The CALS portfolio manager excels at planning and executing a product portfolio and is passionate about technology and the impact well-designed products can make on people’s lives.  This position works with a small number of cross-functional development teams skilled in learning science and UX, content creation, and software engineering to guide product development from inception through launch and evaluation.


The portfolio manager exhibits the highest level of expertise and knowledge in the design, development, and continuous improvement of products as well as how agile principles and practices can improve team effectiveness.

Required Skills

Essential Functions and Responsibilities - {list of significant responsibilities and essential duties that must be completed in order to achieve the objectives of the position}

  • Creates, maintains, and documents CALS roadmaps at both the portfolio and product levels; prepares for and presents roadmap and product vision for CALS product advisory board meetings.
  • Manages initiatives through the product lifecycle from concept and initiation, iterative improvement cycles to release.
  • Defines and communicates product vision in close collaboration with CALS learning experience designers and researchers. Defines and documents scope, vision, objectives, goals, plans, requirements, proposals, estimates, schedules, and resources.
  • Maintains and communicates status, and updates plans as needed.
  • Gathers and prioritizes product and partner requirements. Manages and refines product backlogs. Writes epics, user stories, and acceptance criteria.  Works with stakeholders to manage and prioritize stories for the development team.
  • Designs and continuously improves team’s agile development approach, maximizing team’s ability to execute while minimizing administration/overhead; serves as team agile coach.
  • Collaborates with developers and subject matter experts to establish the technical vision and analyze tradeoffs between usability and performance needs, determining platforms, components, software applications, technologies, and security measures.
  • Clearly communicates constraints, conflicts, requirements, compatibility issues, and items which could affect project outcome, final performance level, or product efficacy. Offers appropriate alternatives and contingency plans.
  • Negotiates dependencies between CALS and internal and external partners and maintains productive working relationships.
  • Identifies and monitors product Key Performance Indicators to track usage and success.
  • Provides visibility into progress by maintaining burndown charts, velocity analysis, etc.
  • Fulfills other duties as assigned.
