Job Description


Western Governors University is seeking a flexible, dynamic, and self-directed individual to join our team and contribute to the development and delivery of exceptional mentor training. This is a full-time, work-from- home position that requires travel to a WGU training facility for at least one week each month. Additional travel to annual and/or semi-annual meetings may be required. The successful candidate will report directly to the Mentor Training Manager.
Ensuring student success through the development of exceptional mentors is the priority of the Mentor Training team. We accomplish this by ensuring that WGU mentors develop an excellent foundation during initial training and by providing ongoing training and innovative tools to help them excel throughout their career. The Mentor Trainer will focus on ongoing training, professional development, and the training of new mentors.


The Mentor Trainer is responsible in whole or in part for the following:


  • collaborating with mentors (faculty), staff, and managers at all levels, both within the Mentoring department and with the larger organization
  • conducting training needs analyses
  • developing competency-based instructional models to address training and mentor development needs
  • developing, curating, and maintaining training and reference materials
  • communicating university updates to the mentoring department
  • designing innovative solutions to address training needs or performance concerns
  • maintaining competency in and up-to- date knowledge of adult learning and training best practices
  • organizing large-scale training events and activities in both in-person and virtual environments
  • providing one-on- one, small-group, and large-group training sessions on a variety of topics, including technology implementation and soft skills
  • researching and evaluating mentor development training materials for use in live and virtual training events
  • consulting with key stakeholders across the university to create, curate, and manage professional development resources

  • a willingness to effectively delegate to, collaborate with, and utilize the expertise of a diverse group of faculty
  • the ability to have difficult, high-stakes conversations and to give and receive feedback in a professional manner
  • a sense of humor

Required Experience

Basic Requirements:

  • Master's degree
  • 2 years of experience in training, or managerial roles or teaching/advising higher-ed students
  • Experience working independently in remote setting
  • Experience with distance-learning and adult-learning
  • Experience delivering training (facilitation, teaching) in virtual environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Education, Leadership, Instructional Design, Communication, or Psychology
  • Experience with WGU
  • Experience with multimedia creation software (Adobe Captivate, Camtasia)
