News Release: WGU "Military-Friendly" for Four Years Straight, 12/1/10

Online University Selected by MAE for Annual Guide to Top Military-Friendly Colleges and Universities

Salt Lake City — Online, non-profit Western Governors University has been selected by Military Advanced Education (MAE) for inclusion in the magazine’s Fourth Annual Guide to Top Military-Friendly Colleges & Universities. WGU has been included in the guide, which provides information regarding higher education opportunities for military personnel and their spouses, since its first publication four years ago.

“This guide has become an invaluable tool for both Education Service Officers/Specialists and Base Transition Officers when advising their service members about degree and certification opportunities currently available from institutions of higher learning,” said MAE Associate Publisher Glenn R. Berlin.

WGU was selected for the guide for the rigor and quality of the university’s academics, the advice and support it provides to its students, and the sophistication and effectiveness of its distance education. All online, WGU is ideal for military personnel and their spouses because it allows them to study from any location with an Internet connection. The university’s unique competency-based learning model lets students advance by demonstrating their knowledge of subject matter rather than by logging time in class. In addition, students who can devote additional time to their studies can accelerate, completing their degrees faster and saving tuition costs. WGU’s tuition is affordable, less than $5,800 per 12-month year.

Western Governors University offers over 50 online bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in Business, Teacher Education, Information Technology, and Healthcare Professions, including Nursing. Currently, approximately 1,800 active duty military, military spouses, and veterans are enrolled at WGU. The university’s degree programs are approved for tuition assistance for active-duty, reserve, and National Guard personnel, and veterans are eligible for education benefits through the GI Bill®. WGU offers competitive scholarships for active-duty military, reservists, military spouses, and veterans. More information regarding these programs can be found at
