WGU Texas, Alamo Colleges District Partnership

Partnership streamlines the process to pursue bachelor’s and master’s degrees

Feb 14, 2020

SAN ANTONIO, TX (Feb. 13, 2020) – Online, non-profit university WGU Texas announced today the signing of agreements with Alamo Colleges District that create pathways for the community colleges’ students, employees, and graduates to work toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree and further their education at WGU Texas. Alamo Colleges District is comprised of five colleges in San Antonio—St. Philip’s College, San Antonio College, Palo Alto College, Northwest Vista College, and Northeast Lakeview College. They serve students in Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Kerr, and Wilson counties. The district was established in 1945 and is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

“This partnership agreement offers an exciting opportunity for our students, faculty, and staff to continue on their pathway to a bachelor’s or master’s degree at WGU Texas through their outstanding online program,” said Alamo Colleges District Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores. “It aligns with our goal of streamlining the process for pursuing higher education goals beyond our colleges,” he added.

This is the first transfer agreement between Alamo Colleges and WGU Texas. The agreement will streamline the process for Alamo Colleges students and graduates pursuing a bachelor’s degree at WGU Texas.

Presidents from the five colleges attended the signing event that included remarks from WGU Texas Chancellor Steven Johnson and Alamo Colleges District Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores.

Through the agreement with WGU Texas, Alamo Colleges graduates, faculty, and staff may select among more than 60 accredited bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in information technology, business, health professions, and teaching. Transfer students also receive special benefits including:

•       5 percent discounted tuition at WGU Texas,

•       Exclusive partner scholarships, valued at up to $2,000,

•       Comprehensive transfer policy.

“WGU Texas is thrilled to expand its presence in the eight counties Alamo Colleges District serves,” said Dr. Steven Johnson, Chancellor, WGU Texas. “Community colleges in Texas enroll almost half of all students in the state—over 730,000 students. This partnership creates an opportunity to link those students to alternative, viable pathways to earning a degree and preparing them to enter some of the state’s most in-demand careers.”

WGU Texas’ current enrollment is more than 13,000 students, with students enrolled in 233 of the state’s 254 counties. Approximately 1,400 students in Atascosa, Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, and Wilson counties attend WGU Texas, and more than 300 WGU Texas current students are transfers from the five colleges that make up the Alamo Colleges District.
