Name not matching?

WGU requires the name on your academic record to match the records of the Social Security Administration (SSA). If your name has recently changed and no longer matches the records of the SSA, please download, complete, and submit the SSA's "Form SS-5," available here:

http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.html

Why we need your Social Security Number or Taxpayer ID

WGU requires applicants to provide either their Social Security Number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for the following reasons —

  1. Processing of Federal and state financial aid
  2. To report valuable educational tax credit information to you
  3. To verify your identity and protect you from identity fraud or abuse

If you are a non-U.S. citizen, you may obtain a U.S. Social Security Number if you have permission to work in the U.S. For more information, please visit http://www.socialsecurity.gov.

If you are a non-U.S. citizen who is ineligible for a Social Security Number but are still required to file a U.S. tax return, you should instead apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. For information, please visit http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96287,00.html.

Failing to provide at least one of these identifiers may mean that WGU cannot facilitate certain important services, such as Financial Aid, education tax credits, student loan deferments, veteran’s benefits, and other benefits under the law. We may also need your SSN at some point to authenticate your identity.

If you choose not to provide either of these numbers at this time, please enter a series of zeros in the required fields; we will, however, ask for it again during the enrollment process.

International Students

Thank you for your interest in WGU. At the present time, WGU is only accepting applications from individuals living in the U.S., Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as from U.S. military personnel and their families at overseas installations. WGU is also now accepting applications from Canadian residents in certain select geographic areas. (An Enrollment Counselor has more information about which areas are eligible to submit applications.)

Unfortunately, we have discovered that we cannot always guarantee that the educational experience for students living outside the United States will meet our high standards for quality and convenience. It is our expectation that these issues will be resolved in future years. We wish you well in your educational pursuits and regret that we cannot help you at this time.
