Before becoming a licensed teacher in District of Columbia, you must meet all of the district’s teacher certification requirements (for those who have attended out-of-state teacher preparation programs), including:

  • PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: Completion of a teacher education program that is a) approved to lead to teacher certification in the home state of the preparing institution and b) completed at an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • MAJOR REQUIREMENT: A major in the subject area for which the applicant is seeking DC teacher certification.
  • BASIC SKILLS EXAM: Passing scores on the basic skills exam.
  • CONTENT EXAMS: Passing scores on all of the required content exams.
  • BACKGROUND CLEARANCE: Fingerprint clearance resulting from completing the required background check.
