CCDC Practice Kickoff

August 29th 6:00PM PDT / 9:00PM EDT

The National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (NCCDC) is an annual cyber defense competition that challenges students to support and defend a small enterprise network and sustain normal business operations in the midst of a targeted cyberattack.

CCDC is unique in that a team of up to 8 students must not only find and resolve security issues within a business network while detecting and responding to targeted cyber threats, but they must also demonstrate proficiency performing administrative and business functions while balancing security against the needs of the business under pressure and with limited resources.

Win or lose, students walk away from this competition with a realistic experience of working in an enterprise security operations center that they can take with them directly into the workforce.

The WGU Cyber Club has competed in the virtual At Large Regional event (ALCCDC) since 2020 with the aim to advance to the National competition held in person each year in San Antonio, Texas.

Do you want to join us? It's easy!

If you're not already a member of WGU Cyber Club, click the "Join the club" at the top of this page. Once you are a member, you'll have access to the Discord server, which is where we all meet. Visit the #self-roles channel on the server and click on the Shield icon to add yourself to the Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition Notifications role to receive notifications for new announcements. Also be sure to visit the Events section of the server (at the top of the channel list) and add your interest to the next CCDC meeting to get a reminder when it starts!

Our introduction meetings begin in August, followed by training to get you ready for the competition. We'll have meetings to practice skills and techniques that will help students compete in CCDC as well as other defensive cybersecurity competitions, such as Hivestorm and CyberForce.

The #ccdc-challenges channel on Discord is where we'll discuss and practice for the regional competition, which will take place in early 2023. All are welcome and encouraged to participate in the preseason training! Whether you want to compete on the team, learn new skills, or just satisfy your curiosity about cyber competitions, we hope you will find value in the meetings. The skills and techniques we practice will be applicable to anyone with an interest in defensive cybersecurity tactics.

We're also on the lookout for students, alumni, and others who are interested in helping the club prepare. If you would like to share your skills by leading a training walkthrough, giving a presentation, helping to build and administer practice labs, or if you would like to help in other ways, we would love to hear from you.

So, join the WGU Cyber Club if you're not already a member and come find us on Discord to join our practice sessions. Perhaps you might be on the first WGU CCDC team headed to the National competition!
