WGU & LOS ANGELES CHARGERS

Inspiring Change in the Community

Two Teams. One Goal: Create Opportunity for All through Education.

The Chargers love their fans. And WGU loves our grads. That’s why we’re partnering to create more equitable, affordable access to quality education.

  • WGU is offering 12 scholarships to Chargers fans, each valid for one year of free tuition at our accredited, non-profit, online university.
  • In addition to the scholarships above, WGU has also partnered with LAUSD as part of the Chargers Football and Formulas initiative, where WGU has developed a free online STEM program for LA’s middle school students and teachers.
The LA Chargers and WGU recently partnered with LAUSD for a First Books Event to donate books to Heninger Elementary school students in Santa Ana, CA.

An Investment in Education

“The Chargers are excited to partner with Western Governors University to integrate sports and higher education within the local community. This partnership is truly an investment in education and career advancement. By working with schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District the Chargers and WGU will continue to engage with local youth through various events and touch points designed to help students build a foundation for future success.”

–Heather Birdsall, LA Chargers Director of Community Partnerships

Inspiring Change in LA

At WGU, we believe in creating pathways to opportunity. The Chargers-WGU partnership is proud to inspire change in LA through outreach with Los Angeles Unified School District and the Football and Formulas initiative as well as through full year tuition scholarships to members of the LA community.

Meet the First Recipients of a One-Year Scholarship to WGU!

Through a partnership with the Los Angeles Chargers, two Los Angeles County WGU students have been awarded one-year full-tuition scholarships in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.

WGU students Veronica Gomez, a project manager, and Jacklyn Hernandez, a patient service representative, are both pursuing an MBA. Rick Benbow, WGU's Regional Vice President, presented them with their scholarships and prizes at the Chargers Practice Facility in Costa Mesa, California. In addition to the scholarships, recipients were awarded two tickets to a Chargers game.

WGU Supports Our Military Students

The Chargers-WGU partnership is also proud to honor our veterans and members of the military community. This includes Hannah Vandertie who is pursuing her Master of Science in Nursing at WGU. See her surprised with a scholarship here.

Surprising Students with the Gift of Education

Mariama Fofanah is an LA resident from Sierra Leone who is studying special education at WGU. This degree is not offered in her home country and she wants to use it to be a safe haven in the special needs community. See her surprised with a scholarship here.

Why Chargers Fans Are a Great Fit for WGU

As the official education partner of the Los Angeles Chargers, WGU is committed to helping fans like you earn a life-changing degree.

Accessible, affordable higher education:

  • Did you know that 69% of WGU’s students come from one or more underserved populations? 1 Whether you’re a first-generation college student, student of color, or come from a low-income family, we believe everyone deserves access to a quality higher education.
  • WGU also awarded nearly $20 million in need-based scholarships last year alone and has additional grants and financial aid programs that can significantly lower the cost of your degree. In fact, our grads average 49% less debt2 and a 1.5-year payback on their tuition investment!3
