Perfect for Your Busy Life
You face many challenges—perhaps working full time and caring for your family—all the while trying to further your education. Going to a traditional university campus just may not work with your schedule or be accessible. WGU is a unique, regionally-accredited university that grants degrees and certificates based completely on competencies—your ability to demonstrate your skills and knowledge on a series of assessments carefully selected to measure your knowledge of a field of study—rather than through required courses.

  • Obtain your degree completely online—from any location
  • Use the knowledge you gained from prior work, academic, or life experience through assessments and move through your degree program more quickly
  • Avoid taking courses in areas you have already mastered
  • Study at a time and place convenient to you

About the Scholarship
The WGU Scholarships for Rural Mathematics and Science Educators are designated for individuals currently teaching or desiring to teach mathematics or science in one of America's rural school districts or rural schools. Each scholarship is valued at up to $7,500 and will be credited to the recipient's account at the rate of $1,500 per six-month term for up to five terms. Although WGU's competency-based model makes it possible for students to complete the requirements of their programs in less than two and a half years, the scholarship awards are based on a reasonable experience of five six-month terms to complete a program. The actual time to complete the program will depend upon the incoming student's prior experience, academic background, and time commitment to studying.

Before monies are distributed, the scholarship recipient must read the WGU Student Handbook and agree to and understand the academic progress, tuition and refund policies. The student will also be required to sign a WGU Scholarship Agreement before monies will be awarded. The agreement will include an affidavit that requires the student to teach in a rural area for two years following completion of their degree program. The student must also meet the university's Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements to maintain scholarship eligibility.

Tuition for a six-month term is $2,790, less the $1,500 per term scholarship.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Currently live in a rural area* in the U.S.
  • Submit official transcripts of all prior college work.
  • Complete an application.
  • Satisfactorily complete the WGU Readiness Assessment.
  • Be officially admitted to WGU.
  • Interview with a WGU Scholarship Counselor or Enrollment Counselor prior to award decision.
Note: This is a new scholarship program designed to expand access to teacher education programs for rural teachers. Students currently enrolled in WGU degree programs are not eligible.

* For the purposes of this scholarship, “Rural Area” is defined as any zip code listed with a rural rating of 4.0 or higher in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s database. Speak to a WGU Scholarship Counselor or Enrollment Counselor to see if your zip code makes you eligible.

Financial Aid is Also Available
You may choose to pay for the remaining portion of your degree through federal financial aid (subject to your eligibility). Pell Grants, which do not have to be repaid, are granted based upon financial need. Federal Direct Student Loans are available to all students. Subsidized loans, which are dependent on financial need, reduce the interest due on the loans.

If you would like to discuss the scholarship program or WGU's degrees before submitting an application for the scholarship, feel free to speak to an enrollment counselor toll free at 1-866-225-5948.

"WGU has opened doors for me that I would not have been able to access without an extreme inconvenience for my family, my career, and myself."
—Connie Keogh, WGU graduate
"On my own time…"

—Dennis Nalder, WGU graduate student
"Speed their licensure…"
WGU Teachers College will be a boon to states seeking training for current teachers and paraprofessionals to help them meet the education requirements under the No Child Left Behind Act and speed their licensure."
