Three Ways You Can Engage in SEL Day on March 10

Mar 2, 2023

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) helps all of us develop skills so we can be our best selves at work, school, life, and in our communities. It is a process that honors each person's inherent strengths and the value of life-long learning. Enjoy these three SEL-building skills from Hilary Simon, Sr. Manager, Social Emotional Learning at WGU.

#1: Try a Self-Check

Press “pause” during your busy day to notice how you are feeling. What emotions are you experiencing? What thoughts are running through your head? What might you need in that moment? Self-checks build your self-awareness skills, which you use in school to notice when you need help with coursework, in your career to avoid burnout from a heavy workload, and in your life to know when stress is taking over.

#2: Try Connecting

Positive relationships are linked to greater physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Reach out to at least one person. You can ask them how they're doing, share a quick story, and tell them how they've had a meaningful impact on your life. Connecting with others builds your communication skills, which you use in school to demonstrate your knowledge and abilities, in your career, to network and expand your possibilities, and in life, to improve your health and happiness.

#3: Try Curiosity

As you engage in tasks and conversations, challenge yourself to ask questions: Is there a better way to do this? What are the goals of this action? Is there a different way of seeing the situation? Asking questions builds your strategic thinking skills and expands your perspective. You use these skills in school to improve academically, in your career to design and deliver better solutions, and in your life to change habits that keep you from reaching your goals.
