WGU Tennessee Shares Helpful Tips for Going Back to School in the New Year

Jan 20, 2023

As we enter the season of New Year’s resolutions, defining and sticking to our goals can be tough – especially as job, family, and other commitments take precedence. For nearly a decade, WGU Tennessee has provided affordable degree programs to help working adults achieve their career dreams. Thinking of heading back to school in the new year? Check out a few tips for staying on the right path and reaching your education goals in 2023.

Define your goals – Before you jump in, take some time to speak with your current employer, or employers in the field in which you want to work, to see what credentials they value and what skills would be necessary to help you grow in your career. If you’re looking to change careers, talk with other professionals and mentors in that field to understand what experience would be helpful as you pursue a degree program.

Consider past experiences – Contact your previous higher-education institutions to request copies of your transcripts; your new school will likely review the information to determine how many of your prior academic credits it will accept.

Pay attention to finances – The financial burden of a degree can often be the main reason adults decide against pursuing higher education. Be sure to review costs associated with applying to and paying for school: fees, books, housing, and other costs. There are many resources available to prospective students, from government assistance to grants and scholarships. Find a social support network – Surround yourself with people who believe in your educational journey and offer pathways toward success. WGU Tennessee takes pride in offering plenty of resources to make the online experience enjoyable and flexible with your busy schedule. Students are assigned a program mentor from their field of study who will guide them throughout their program.

At WGU Tennessee, we understand that going back to school can be intimidating; but we know that you can succeed – and want to give you the tools, tips, and assistance to do it.

To help you get there, we’re launching our Tenn-K Scholarship fund for the ninth year. Through our biggest scholarship of the year, we’ll be awarding 10 scholarships worth up to $10,000 each, covering nearly 70% of the cost of tuition. Applications open Jan. 3 and close March 31.
