WGU Texas Offering $100,000 in Cybersecurity Scholarships

The scholarship will help prepare students for a successful career as a cybersecurity professional

Oct 11, 2021

AUSTIN — To coincide with Cyber Security Awareness Month, WGU Texas is making $100,000 in scholarships available to students who want to enhance their skills by earning a bachelor’s or master’s degree in cybersecurity. Each Cybersecurity Scholarship is valued up to $5,000 and designed to help students with significant assistance as they pursue an affordable, accredited degree. Scholarships are awarded at the rate of $1,250 per six-month term.

Students enrolled in WGU’s bachelor’s or master’s degree in cybersecurity will graduate with the skills needed to succeed in the field and valuable industry-recognized certifications included at no extra cost. Many graduates start their professional careers at a mid-level IT status when entering the workforce.

A recent Cybersecurity Scholarship recipient and WGU Texas student, Bylii Hyward attended community college in Portland, where she started to gain an interest in cybersecurity and coding. “Once I had the opportunity to study, it became clear to me that cybersecurity was something I felt strongly about and as a career track,” she said. “This scholarship is life changing. I wasn’t sure if I could afford the rest of my tuition, and WGU has really been the answer to earning my degree. From financial aid to my program mentor, everyone has been so supportive.”

As cyber threats and security breaches increase, the demand for highly-skilled cybersecurity experts will continue to expand. WGU was recently designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) by the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security. The designation is given to institutions who demonstrate the ability to provide qualified professionals into the workforce.
