Show Yourself Some Love

This Valentine's Day, love yourself by earning a degree.

Feb 11, 2020

Valentine’s Day is this week and we think now is a good time as any to treat yourself too—with a degree! What are some questions to ask yourself before going back to school? Here are some things to definitely consider:

What time do you have available?

If getting a degree is something you really want, go for it, but make sure you can set aside the time needed. If you work, plan your education for evenings and weekends. If you have a family, talk with them to let them know what your goals are and what that could mean for your time.

Does this fit in with your goals?

If you are currently employed and want to advance, a degree could help you do so. You would be learning new skills that could prove beneficial to your career. If you want to change careers, look into what the requirements are and plan accordingly. Ultimately, you need to sit down and make a list of goals. Once you have your goals, determine what is needed to accomplish them. If that is a degree, research institutions that offer what you need.

Do you have the funds available?

Some employers may even reimburse you for any education you seek while there. Ask your Human Resources department what opportunities like that are available to cover your cost of education

What type of experience are you looking for?

Do you like to sit in a classroom, or do you prefer to go at your own pace online? This question is important in determining the educational experience that is right for you. Online degrees can offer the same education you could receive in a traditional institution, while allowing you the freedom to gain the degree from wherever you are. Look into accreditation and make sure the institution is right for you.

What type of support do you need?

Apart from speaking with your family, do you need any other support to stay on track? Some institutions will pair you with a mentor who is responsible to help you succeed whether that is helping you stay organized or providing emotional support. Find out what you need to succeed in order to better of the support you will need.

Now that we have covered all that—are you choosing college as your Valentine’s Day gift to yourself? We certainly hope so because people don’t regret going back to school, they regret not going.
