WGU Program Mentors are Here for Students

WGU program mentors offer personalized support to students from their first day to graduation.

In a recent interview, WGU M.S. IT Management graduate Selina T., of Philadelphia, thanked her program mentor Deneen Davis, of Virginia, for pushing her and always being there for her, saying, “You knew the right things to say when I needed to hear them. The day I finished my last test, it was a Saturday night, and you still found the time to call me and celebrate with me. That was such a big deal.

“We’ve been through so much these last two years- thank you.”

When Selina decided to go back to school for Information technology, she hadn’t been to school in over 20 years, was a full-time working mom and was trying to deal with many balls in the air. Deneen was there to help her understand different approaches to studying and find what’s going to work for her.

Of the importance of this personalized support, Deneen said, “It’s good when you have a student that listens and, even if they go through things, you can still point them along the way. The mentoring program helps you get through and reach your goal.”

The year 2021 was not good for either of them—Selina lost her dad, while Deneen lost her husband. They were able to empathize with each other and grow closer on that shared support.

Selina says, “Deneen was focused on me. She was focused on my degree plan. Having my own person to help me get through this was huge.”

Of watching her students’ journey, Deneen says, “My best time is to see them graduate because you go through all of these obstacles, and it was good to see her do it.

“It’s like a friend that you feel like you met in person.”

If you’re thinking of going back to school, you can do it! And your WGU program mentor can help.
