DURHAM — WGU North Carolina, an affiliate of the online competency-based Western Governors University, has announced a new scholarship for members of the North Carolina Science Leadership Association (NCSLA). Three qualifying NCSLA members will receive the WGU North Carolina NCSLA Scholarship valued at $3,000 ($750 tuition credit per term, renewable for up to four terms) in pursuit of a Master of Arts, Master of Science, or Master of Education degree from WGU’s Teachers College.
WGU is one of the top producers of K-12 science and math teachers in the country, and counts 2020 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year Maureen Stover as an alumna. Its Teachers College offers master’s degrees in science education, mathematics education, educational leadership, learning and technology, and more.
More than 700 North Carolinians are currently enrolled in WGU’s Teachers College, including more than 200 pursing master’s degrees. More than 900 Teachers College graduates reside in the state.
“There is a critical need for STEM teachers and leaders in science education in North Carolina and throughout the country,” said Kimberly Estep, Vice President of the Southeast Region for WGU. “We hope that the WGU North Carolina NCSLA Scholarships will enable three outstanding teachers to enhance their knowledge and further their careers.”

Designed for working adults, WGU is an accredited nonprofit online university offering more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degrees in K-12 teacher education, IT, business, and healthcare, including nursing. WGU offers an asynchronous, competency-based model that allows students to log in and access coursework at a time convenient for them, and to accelerate at their own pace. Tuition is around $3,250 per six-month term for most degree programs, and students can take as many classes per term as they are comfortable with, with consent of their WGU mentor.
To qualify for the WGU North Carolina NCSLA Scholarship, you must be a current member of NCSLA (membership will be verified) and apply to a relevant master’s degree program with WGU’s Teachers College.
