Why did you choose to pursue a degree?

I chose to pursue a degree with WGU Tennessee for growth and opportunity in my career path. With a career goal of chief nursing officer (CNO) within the HCA Healthcare organization, I was mentored and supported to obtain my Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Management (MBA) to ensure future preparation and success. In addition, I had a personal desire to expand and develop my leadership knowledge that would allow me to lead and develop others.

Why WGU?

I chose WGU Tennessee because it was highly recommended by other HCA Healthcare colleagues. After researching WGU, I found that the university would provide me with not only the academic knowledge needed to further my leadership journey but also the convenience and flexibility needed to fit my busy work schedule. Also, HCA Healthcare’s partnership with WGU proved to be an attractive employee benefit that was financially beneficial for my family.

How has WGU improved your career?

WGU Tennessee provided me with substantial growth opportunities and training in areas such as operational and financial strategy, leadership development, and expanded tactics in decision-making that I apply daily. The MBA programs helped prepare me for opportunities such as the Leadership Academy and Executive Development Programs at HCA Healthcare. Combined with these leadership programs, WGU helped me meet the qualifications needed to achieve the associate chief nursing officer (ACNO) position I hold today and prepare me for my future career goal of chief nursing officer (CNO).

What is the takeaway you would impart to potential WGU students?

WGU Tennessee provides a great experience for anyone looking to advance their career. As a student, you will receive first-class education, amazing mentor support, and flexibility. Often, I talk to staff who tend to hesitate to advance their education due to busy schedules; but WGU and HCA Healthcare ensure a balance of work, home, and school is achievable.

"As a registered nurse of 14 years, it has been my honor to impact and contribute to the healing process of many lives. When asked “why” I chose or love this career, my answer is simple and consists of four foundational attributes: pride, compassion, accomplishment, and people. HCA Healthcare supports my “why” by providing me a supportive environment where I’m proud to be a nurse with endless growth opportunities and the ability to help heal our community."
