The start of any great journey begins with a pathway and a desire to reach the destination. It takes a lot of motivation, sacrifice, and a bit of grit and passion to keep going, even when the path feels, at times, uncertain.

For many educators, that journey is not defined by a lack of passion or talent, but by barriers: financial constraints, limited flexibility or systems that make advancement feel out of reach.

Addressing Nationwide Teacher Shortages

Across the country, teacher shortages remain a persistent challenge. In New York City, home to the largest public school system in the nation, schools face urgent demand for more certified and fully prepared educators. City officials estimate that more than 3,700 additional teachers will be needed by next year.

WGU’s School of Education is continuously looking to create clear pathways for professionals who are already working in our nation’s classrooms. That’s why I’m especially proud of WGU’s partnership with Consortium Schools, International Schools, and NYC Outward Bound Schools. Through the WGU K–12 Partner Scholarship and NYC Educator Partnership Scholarship, we are expanding access to educator degrees for more than 2,000 employees in the New York City area.

A Learning Model Strategically Built to Serve Teachers

Through our online, competency-based bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, these educators can advance toward licensure and leadership without stepping away from the classrooms and communities they serve.

That continuity is not simply convenient; it is strategic.

The impact of this kind of partnership extends beyond classrooms; it also has an economic, health and household impact. Working professionals can pursue higher education without sacrificing income, health insurance, childcare, or other essential supports. WGU offers programs that fit the schedules of everyday working people.

Helping Careers Grow While Strengthening Schools

To help educators across America, from major cities to rural communities, in reaching the end of their educational journey, it starts with clearing the pathway, and collaboration helps speed up this process. WGU is always ready to partner with school districts, superintendents and all education leaders to help advance their educators’ skills while keeping teachers, paraprofessionals, and school employees where they are needed most: in classrooms and with their students.

Reaching the end of the educational pathway is the goal for every student.

WGU will continue creating pathways for individuals to pursue purposeful careers that strengthen schools and communities, shaping the future for generations to come.
