Brennan Bailey remembers working one-on-one with a young student who didn’t believe he could read. But after patiently helping the child sound out a word, something clicked—and the student’s eyes lit up with realization. In that moment, he believed he could learn.

One Teacher’s Story: Brennan Bailey of Toledo, Washington

While working toward his bachelor’s degree at WGU, Brennan said he honed the work ethic and discipline that helped him thrive as a university student. His experience as a student teacher in Toledo—just down the road from where he grew up—fueled his passion for the classroom and inspired him to keep going.

That drive led him to pursue a master’s degree at Harvard, followed by a Doctor of Education from Capella University. He also grew in his career, finding new ways to expand his impact on young learners. Over the years, he served the Toledo School District as a teacher, Assistant Principal, and now Superintendent.

"I wanted to be the best teacher I could be," Bailey said. "The more I learned, the more I wanted to keep learning—both to grow personally and to give my students the best experience possible. I also formed a deep connection with the Toledo community during that time, and that really motivated me to continue serving here."

To honor his extraordinary leadership and lifelong commitment to learning, WGU recently surprised Bailey with the WGU Elevate Award—a recognition presented to individuals who create meaningful pathways to opportunity for others. He also accepted a $2,000 grant  from the university to support district programs that enhance student experience.

Bailey called the surprise award presentation "an incredible honor," adding, "This grant will help support important work we’re doing to serve students and families in our district."

According to Dr. Tonya Drake, WGU regional vice president for the northwest, honoring Bailey was an easy decision.

"At WGU, we deeply admire Brennan’s commitment to helping young learners grow and succeed," Drake said. "He is an outstanding example of the power of lifelong learning, and of what it looks like to give back with purpose and passion."

Supporting Those Who Inspire

In addition to honoring educators like Bailey, WGU offers the WGU Loves Teachers Scholarship, which supports aspiring and current teachers pursuing a degree or credential through the university's School of Education. The scholarship is valued at up to $4,000, with $1,000 awarded per six-month term, and is renewable for up to four terms. It reflects the university’s deep commitment to helping educators access the opportunities they deserve.
