WGU North Carolina Celebrates Fourth Anniversary
Measuring our progress since 2017
WGU North Carolina was officially launched on October 5, 2017 during a press conference in Raleigh with Western Governors University President Scott Pulsipher. Thanks to great word-of-mouth and a robust marketing campaign (remember the TV ads with the talking owls?), we have experienced tremendous growth since then.
This past year we welcomed Ben Coulter, Ed.D., as the new Chancellor of WGU North Carolina and Director of WGU’s Southeast Region. We hired U.S. Army veteran Mike Merzke as a Strategic Partnerships Manager to work with the military community. We were also happy to add Ryan Bower to our team as Communications Manager.
WGU North Carolina reached some major milestones in the past year, including surpassing 5,000 graduates in-state, and having active students in all 100 counties.
We remain committed to making higher education accessible and affordable. In the past year alone, we’ve distributed more than $843,000 in scholarships to 352 students. For the third year, we offered Military Service Scholarships specifically to members of North Carolina’s military community.
To date we’ve signed partnerships with 15 North Carolina community colleges to pave the way for their graduates to transfer seamlessly to WGU and to be able to apply for Community College Partner Scholarships. More than 2,700 students from North Carolina community colleges have continued their studies at WGU.
