Frequently asked questions about master's degrees.

What is a master's degree?

A master’s degree, sometimes called a graduate degree, is the first level of graduate study. Most programs require that students have a bachelor’s degree before they can pursue a master’s degree. A master's degree can help you become eligible for a raise, promotion, or career change. It is often considered a higher-level degree program giving you more specific skills and training in a certain area.

Should I get a master's degree?

It's important to personally evaluate if a master's degree is the right move for you. You need to ask yourself if you're passionate about the subject, if it will truly benefit your career, and what kinds of programs would work best for you. Research shows that the average pay raise for professionals with a master's degree is 38%, and over the course of their career they can expect to earn 70% more because of their master's degree. There are also more job opportunities for those with a master's degree. All of this should go into consideration when you're evaluating if a master's degree is right for you.

What are the benefits of a master's degree?

There are many benefits of a master's degree, including:

  • Career change opportunity. If you're looking to change careers, a master's degree can be key to helping you reach your goal. For example, if you want to become a teacher, there are many master's degrees that can help you get the skills and qualifications you need, as well as preparing you for a teaching license. An MBA can give you important credentials and skills you need to become a manager. If you want to pursue a new career, consider a master's degree.
  • More job possibilities. The BLS says that jobs that require a master's degree are expected to grow 16% over the next few years. This means that if you have a master's degree, there will be many more job opportunities available to you.
  • Higher salary potential. Master's degree graduates can expect to earn an average of around $15,000 more per year than a bachelor's degree graduate. While the amount you make may vary by industry, it is fairly standard that a bachelor's degree will mean higher salary potential.

How long does it take to get a master's degree?

The amount of time it will take you to get a master's degree really depends on the type of degree you choose. For example at WGU, some students finish a degree program in as little as six months, while other programs take three years. It's valuable to find a degree program that allows you to accelerate if you're looking to graduate faster. Degree programs like those at WGU allow you to move through courses as quickly as you can master the material, enabling you to accelerate and earn your degree faster.

How much is an online master's degree?

The amount you'll pay for an online master's degree will depend on where you choose to attend. Different schools will have different tuition and fee amounts. WGU is one of the most affordable options for an online degree program, with each program costing between $4,000 and $6,000 for a six-month term. Tuition charged per term means that you won't pay more if you take extra classes, so if you finish faster you'll pay less!

How is an online master's degree different from an on-campus master's degree?

There are several key things that make a traditional master's degree different from an online master's degree, including:

  • No campus. For an online master's degree, you don't have to go into a classroom on a campus to attend class. In fact, for many online master's degree programs, you don't have class at all! You don't have to log in, you simply learn from videos and textbooks.
  • Less expensive. Online master's degrees tend to be less expensive than traditional campus master's degrees because the school isn't paying for facilities and other elements of traditional degrees.
  • Work on your schedule. Because you are online, you can do your school work whenever works for you. You can keep your full-time job and maintain your other responsibilities because you are in charge of your schooling.

Are online master's degrees credible?

83% of employers say they view an online degree with the same respect as a traditional degree. This means that your online master's degree is respected and valued by professionals. You can expect an online master's degree to be well-received and a great boost to your résumé.

It's important to pick an online master's degree from an accredited university. Accreditation signals to employers that your school is held to high standards and is respected in the academic community. Regional accredited universities like WGU are held to the exact same academic standards as traditional universities, meaning their degree programs are rigorous and challenging, and geared to helping students succeed.

MBA graduate

I appreciate the ability to work at my own pace and at any time of day. I would've liked more support from my mentor. I didn't always feel like she was working with me to be successful. Overall, my course instructors were helpful and I was able to schedule appointments quickly. I am satisfied with my experience at WGU and would recommend the school for its MBA program.

Old Dog, New Success

I achieved an initial AAS degree from a college in 1991. For the past (29) years, I've contemplated going back to college to finish a BS degree but always found it difficult due to the pace constraints of other college programs and/or the location requirements to further my education. I have been somewhat successful over the years, however, was past over for employment opportunities many times due to my lack of a BS degree. This happened to me for the last time in 2019 and I decided to seek out a program that allowed me to work at my pace, complete coursework no matter where my global job took me and was reasonably priced. WGU was an answer to my situation and afforded me the opportunity to rapidly complete my degree due to my plethora of experience gained throughout my career. Although I had a lot of experience, the curriculum challenged me to learn new skills, deepen my understanding of some concepts and ultimately earned the degree to take my career to a new level. Not only did WGU help me achieve my initial educational goal, it has given me a new hunger and motivation to take my education to the next level. I completed a BS in Business Management in September 2020 and have decided to enroll for a graduate degree program beginning January 2021. I am excited to take the next step and am thankful for WGU's outstanding vision and commitment to effective and affordable adult education.

I have been very impressed with my experience so far. I have received my BSN in nursing and moved right into my MSN. My student mentor has been amazing and I feel that all of the course instructors are extremely helpful and have the student’s best interest in mind. I feel like all of the support centers and staff are a great resource as well. I have felt that Everyone at WGU wants me to succeed and I have loved the education I have received.

Accelerated Learning

I obtained both my undergraduate and graduate degrees in business through WGU. In both cases, I was able to accelerate, finishing my undergraduate in 11 months and my graduate in 4 months. While I didn't feel I needed any assistance to advocate for my needs, my mentors were consistent and always willing to help.

Amazing educational program

Amazing educational program! I did my MBA through WGU and it was perfect. The self-paced, online program absolutely works. I was able to still work full time, pay attention to my family, and do homework at night. Classes were challenging but engaging. I was worried about being able to comprehend the subject matter since it had been so many years since getting my bachelor's degree. I started WGU's MBA program when I was 49 and finished within 18 months. That same 18 months would have gone by whether or not I started this. Tremendous program with amazing support! I highly recommend WGU to anyone who wants to return to school. I would have returned to school sooner had I known about this 100% online program. Well worth the investment of tuition and time.

Doing my MAT and credential with WGU…

Doing my MAT and credential with WGU was by far the most affordable and efficient way I could have done it. I was able to work full time, and still complete my course work in 18 months. Other schools were not going to allow me to work, estimated it would take 2 years for the program, and were going to cost nearly 3x as much. The coursework was challenging but not arduous, and the professors and staff were very supportive.

Outstanding experience

I just graduated with my Bachelor’s in education and couldn’t love WGU more! From the immersive curriculum, affordability, and teachers and mentors who go above and beyond to support and encourage you, this is a university model that more schools should follow! They helped this adult learner and mom realize a dream I’ve had for a very long time and I’ve already re-enrolled for my Master’s degree!

I got both my bachelor and master…

I got both my bachelor and master degrees from WGU. It would not have been possible at a regular university for me. I was able to continue working and spend time with my family. I could study on weekends, evenings, early mornings, over school breaks and even while on vacation. I could access my classes from my computer or my phone, could attend live or recorded class sessions when needed and had access to instructors whenever I needed help or had questions. The cost was well below any other school.
