You can start when you’re ready, rather than rushing (or waiting) for fall or spring enrollment.  So, it’s back-to-school time year-round at WGU!

Frequently asked questions about master's programs and degrees.

What is a master's degree?

A master’s degree, sometimes called a graduate degree, is the first level of graduate study. Most programs require that students have a bachelor’s degree before they can pursue a master’s degree. A master's degree can help you become eligible for a raise, promotion, or career change. It is often considered a higher-level degree program giving you more specific skills and training in a certain area.

Should I get a master's degree?

It's important to personally evaluate if a master's degree is the right move for you. You need to ask yourself if you're passionate about the subject, if it will truly benefit your career, and what kinds of programs would work best for you. Research shows that the average pay raise for professionals with a master's degree is 38%, and over the course of their career they can expect to earn 70% more because of their master's degree. There are also more job opportunities for those with a master's degree. All of this should go into consideration when you're evaluating if a master's degree is right for you.

What are the benefits of a master's degree?

There are many benefits of a master's degree, including:

  • Career change opportunity. If you're looking to change careers, a master's degree can be key to helping you reach your goal. For example, if you want to become a teacher, there are many master's degrees that can help you get the skills and qualifications you need, as well as preparing you for a teaching license. An MBA can give you important credentials and skills you need to become a manager. If you want to pursue a new career, consider a master's degree.
  • More job possibilities. The BLS says that jobs that require a master's degree are expected to grow 16% over the next few years. This means that if you have a master's degree, there will be many more job opportunities available to you.
  • Higher salary potential. Master's degree graduates can expect to earn an average of around $15,000 more per year than a bachelor's degree graduate. While the amount you make may vary by industry, it is fairly standard that a master's degree will mean higher salary potential.

How long does it take to get a master's degree?

The amount of time it will take you to get a master's degree really depends on the type of degree you choose. For example at WGU, some students finish a degree program in as little as six months, while other programs take three years. It's valuable to find a degree program that allows you to accelerate if you're looking to graduate faster. Degree programs like those at WGU allow you to move through courses as quickly as you can master the material, enabling you to accelerate and earn your degree faster.

How much is an online master's degree?

The amount you'll pay for an online master's degree will depend on where you choose to attend. Different schools will have different tuition and fee amounts. WGU is one of the most affordable options for an online degree program, with each program costing between $4,000 and $6,000 for a six-month term. Tuition charged per term means that you won't pay more if you take extra classes, so if you finish faster you'll pay less!

How is an online master's degree different from an on-campus master's degree?

There are several key things that make a traditional master's degree different from an online master's degree, including:

  • No campus. For an online master's degree, you don't have to go into a classroom on a campus to attend class. In fact, for many online master's degree programs, you don't have class at all! You don't have to log in, you simply learn from videos and textbooks.
  • Less expensive. Online master's degrees tend to be less expensive than traditional campus master's degrees because the school isn't paying for facilities and other elements of traditional degrees.
  • Work on your schedule. Because you are online, you can do your school work whenever works for you. You can keep your full-time job and maintain your other responsibilities because you are in charge of your schooling.

Are online master's degrees credible?

83% of employers say they view an online degree with the same respect as a traditional degree. This means that your online master's degree is respected and valued by professionals. You can expect an online master's degree to be well-received and a great boost to your résumé.

It's important to pick an online master's degree from an accredited university. Accreditation signals to employers that your school is held to high standards and is respected in the academic community. Regional accredited universities like WGU are held to the exact same academic standards as traditional universities, meaning their degree programs are rigorous and challenging, and geared to helping students succeed.

Can I do my master's degree online?

Yes. You can complete your master’s degree online, and it will be well-worth the time investment. That said, be sure to earn your degree through an accredited university. There are many advantages to pursuing a master’s degree online, including the ability to progress at your own pace, increased course accessibility, and lower cost. An online master’s degree can be a great option if you’re a working professional or live in a rural area without the luxury of a nearby brick-and-mortar university.

Do employers like online master's degrees?

Yes. Employers are increasingly looking favorably upon online master’s degrees. Satisfaction with online degree recipients is growing increasingly high. In fact, a survey conducted by CareerBuilder.com showed that 83% of executives say that an online degree is just as credible as a traditional degree program.

Are online master's degrees respected?

Yes! Increasingly employers are viewing online degrees with more respect and credibility. Accreditation and awards help increase respect and credibility for your online degree program. The COVID-19 pandemic has also been an increasingly critical piece in helping online degree programs gain respect, as many students relied on online curriculum during that time period.

What can you do with a master's degree?

With a master’s degree, you may be able to set yourself apart from other applicants when it comes to seeking senior-level or management positions. A master’s degree could open up many doors of opportunity in your career. With a master’s degree, you can show potential employers that you’re more highly trained and better equipped for leadership roles.

I was very impressed with my last…

I was very impressed with my last instructor, Pat Alpert, she was the most helpful and insightful professor I had at WGU. Pat Alpert took as much time with me as I needed, even though she has a very busy life herself. Most of all, I hope all WGU's mentors are like Lindsay Bridges, she was an absolute Godsend for me. She could not have been more supportive. I have been recommending WGU. I would say an improvement WGU could make, to include specific directions for technology associated with classes, and also, include examples with assignments.

Absolutely Wonderful!

I had an absolutely wonderful experience at WGU. My mentors and CIs were SO helpful and supportive when I needed them and always let me know they were there and rooting for me. I was able to go at my own speed, but also able to accelerate and finish the whole program while teaching 3rd grade in person during a pandemic, coaching high school volleyball, and being a single mom to 3 boys 5 and under :) I would 100% recommend this program and University to anyone looking to continue their education!

Best Decision

Attending WGU was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I loved the flexibility to work at my own pace. Even though I didn't have any IT background I was able to finish the MSDA program in under 4 months. This was not because it was easy but because I was able to work at my own pace, I enjoyed learning the material and I also wanted to finish in 1 term to avoid paying for another term. This is my 2nd master's degree and I feel that I learned more than I did when I earned my first degree at a brick and morter school. My mentor, Emil Stoica, was very supportive and he became my biggest cheerleader. I thought I would miss the social aspect but there are several WGU facebook groups that helped fill that gap.

Quality, flexible, cost efficient education with a twist

Quality education at a go at your own paced approach The only downside I found (which is disclosed up front) was not having a graded score to have on the transcript (pass/fail only). However, if you want an accredited degree and a challenging path with quality content to study from then WGU delivers. I learned a lot and will value my Master’s in Business Administration with a specialty in IT Management for the rest of my life.

Great experience and fantastic cost

Moral and emotional support from a mentor and course instructors throughout the entire curriculum of your degree plan. Tech support is fantastic and prompt on resolving issues. Financial services quickly processed payments to and from your account. Everyone I spoke to was always considerate, polite and caring. The cost factor for the degree plan I chose and the ability to do it online are major contributing factors for choosing WGU. I highly recommend them to people I know.
