Western Governors University Launches Maryland Rising Together Scholarship to Support Adult Learners, Working Families, and Returning Students Across the State
Governor Wes Moore joins WGU leaders to highlight new opportunity for Maryland residents.
WASHINGTON, D.C., DECEMBER 16, 2025 — Western Governors University (WGU) today announced the launch of the Maryland Rising Together Scholarship, offering up to $4,000 to help Maryland residents complete their degrees and prepare for high-demand careers. The scholarship will center on Maryland’s workforce needs and the barriers that some Marylanders face in balancing jobs and family responsibilities while trying to pursue higher education.
“These are not gaps in talent, they’re gaps in access,” said Dr. K.L. Allen, Northeast regional vice president at WGU. “I speak with residents across the state of Maryland every day who want to finish what they started but haven’t had a path that fits the realities of their lives. Governor Moore’s commitment to making opportunity more accessible inspired us to take action. The Maryland Rising Together Scholarship is designed to help Marylanders move forward, one degree at a time.”
“Maryland is full of people who are working hard, raising families, and serving their communities,” Governor Wes Moore said. “To move our state forward, we must make sure opportunity reaches every community and every household. I’m grateful for partners like WGU who share the goal of helping Maryland residents build strong futures.”
The scholarship is open to new or returning WGU students living in Maryland and enrolled in any of the university’s bachelor's or master’s degree programs in business, technology, education, or healthcare fields where WGU students often advance due to the university’s flexible, competency-based education model.
As WGU continues to grow its footprint in the region, the university now has more than 5,900 graduates across Maryland, demonstrating the increasing demand for flexible, workforce-aligned education statewide.
In addition, WGU continues to partner with Maryland employers, community organizations, and state agencies to expand pathways to opportunity. To learn more or apply for the Maryland Rising Together Scholarship, click here.
